Mindfulness based stress reduction program is a comprehensive training based on ancient healing practices of mindfulness meditation or vipassana and yoga.  There are several scientific research studies proving the efficacy of these techniques.  This program is now offered in several reputed university hospitals in the USA and elsewhere.  

Yoga by itself can provide a complete and effective stress management tool.  The practice of yoga is an ancient one.  It has its origins in the philosophical and spiritual traditions of India.  It has connections to the vedas, upanishads and ayurveda.  Traditionally yoga is seen as a way of life.  The daily practices incorporate a complete system of preventive health and well-being.  It is also practiced as a system of spiritual evolution.  Raja-yoga as described in the Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali have eight arms or 'ashtanga'

1. Yama - five abstentions of ahimsa (non-violence), satya (honesty), asteya (non-covetousness), brahmacharya (discipline), aparigraha (non-possessiveness)

2. Niyama - five observances of saucha (hygiene of body & mind), santosha (contentment), tapas (austerity), svadhyaya (deep study and understanding), ishvarapranidhana (worshipful devotion)

3. Asana - steady and comfortable attitude

4. Pranayama - Breath control

5. Pratyahara - Withdrawal of the senses

6. Dharana - concentration

7. Dhyana - meditation

8. Samadhi - Equilibrium or absolute consciousness

There are aspects of yoga that have been scientifically studied and found to have robust effect on stress management.
